A few days before Thanksgiving I visited my mom at the assisted living facility that is now her home.

The holiday season will be a bittersweet time for me. I’m delighted to still have her but saddened that she won’t be able to sit down to dinner at home due to aging health concerns.

Time spent with her is not only out of love for my mother but also a sense of obligation. After all, she gave me much more than a name. My entire life she gave me her time and affection, and I owe her at least that much in return.

The holidays and all year through reminds us that the season of giving and receiving goes beyond exchanging gifts.
