A Milk & Honey Story from the Lehrman Family

A letter from Milk & Honey volunteer Sheila Duffy-Lehrman

Sylvia Rice and Lexi Lehrman

When we went to Sylvia Rice’s apartment, she was so thankful and spoke about how much she appreciated the help she receives from JCS.  She mentioned she loved the children’s cards that come with the food on the holidays and said she even saved a few of her favorites.  I said “Our children have made those cards for years at their Jewish day school.  Wouldn’t it be funny if one of them was theirs?”  I could hear my children groaning and their eyes rolling when I made the comment.  Mrs. Rice was so happy to show us, she got up with difficulty, went straight to a cabinet and pulled out three or so pristine cards.  We saw Lexi’s and it was such a lovely, meaningful moment. They hugged and the kids loved it.  It was truly beschert.  We have delivered meals since our soon to be 18 yr. old son was only 18 months.  We have never delivered to this woman.  The cards are randomly collected and placed on a table for all to take a handful along with our deliveries.  You just never know how you will touch someone’s life and heart.  Lexi raises money for breast cancer research instead of birthday gifts or holiday presents – she asks for donations.  She calls it her “Art Can Heal” project and has raised over $35,000 over the last 4 years.  She never expected this – it was an uplifting healing moment for our entire family.
