JCS is hosting its Annual Phon-A-Thon to raise vital funds for the 2010 Milk & Honey Food Distribution Campaign.  Do a mitzvah and even get community service hours for raising money for food to be delivered to frail and homebound seniors in our community. Elderly people enjoyed a tropical day of fun when Jewish Community Services of South Florida’s Seymour Gelber Adult Day Care Center hosted a beach party for its clients on July 30.

Rachel Menton, the center’s activities director, said the party allowed the seniors to feel young again.

“It [party] confirms to them that they’re not over the hill and that they don’t think they’re at the end of their lives,” she added. “This gives them something to look forward to and it’s something special. They know they get special food, they get special drinks, even though its just fruit punch, and it’s a party.”

The day’s festivities included games and prizes, water balloons, water pistols, faux fishing, pretend tequila-drinking contests consisting of fruit punch, musical sing-along, and beach-themed food.

Joy Spill, JCS’s immediate past chairperson, said competing in the party’s contests is important for the seniors.

“These kinds of things don’t necessarily happen in their lives all that much and they feel that they’re really accomplishing something in the contests,” Spill added. “Many of them have physical disabilities but the contests are geared for them to do a little bit of physical activity and be a winner.”

Operated in partnership with Miami-Dade County Department of Human Services’ Elderly Services Division, the center has staff specially trained to work with clients who have dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other mental or physical impairments. Events like the beach party are intended to provide clients with the variety and stimulation that is a vital part of the adult day care experience.

Audrey Blair, the center’s director, said the party extends the clients’ lives.

“It makes them more connected mentality,” she added. “It provides them the exercise and activity that strengthens them and prevents hospitalization.”
