Back and Bigger and Better Than Ever!

Sunday, March 25

9 to 11:30 a.m.

For the first time ever, Jewish Community Services is teaming up with other community agencies –

• Jewish Volunteer Center, a program of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation
• PJ Library Miami
• Good Deeds Day/Ruach Tova

– for a day honoring tradition and presenting new volunteer opportunities.

Join JCS and civic-minded volunteers on Good Deeds Day to pay personal visits to those without financial means – and often without family and friends – and deliver special Kosher For Passover food baskets, along with holiday cheer.

Also, on March 25th, participate with others to:

• assemble the food boxes
• make matzah covers as gifts for seniors
• listen to Passover stories for children
• create artwork for JCS’ Miami Beach Senior Center’s Passover celebration

Because State law requires volunteers 18 and over who are involved with seniors and other ‘vulnerable’ populations to undergo background screenings including fingerprinting, JCS has arranged screening opportunities for those who want to deliver food baskets. Please note the private contractor’s fee is $52. In order that all funds can benefit our clients, JCS asks that volunteers absorb this expense and we apologize for any inconvenience. Note: Since screenings are valid for five years, those volunteers who were screened and cleared last year through JCS are ready to go! Other State of Florida screenings are not valid.

Grant will help Miami Beach seniors

STAYING FIT: EnhanceFitness client Jose Solar works out at JCS’ Miami Beach Senior Center.

Jose Solar, 72, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease when he was very young. Each day is a challenge trying to gain strength in his body. He said his hands, legs and balance are affected, but now he has a new chance to feel better. The senior center he visits has just been awarded an $88,000 grant from Health Foundation of South Florida.

Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS) announced that the grant funds the Foundation’s Healthy Aging Regional Collaborative EnhanceFitness program at the Miami Beach Senior Center for 2012.

That is good news for Solar who has been benefitting from the program for the past year. “Thanks to the EnhanceFitness exercises, I have gained more balance, strength and flexibility.” And he added that the benefits are not only physical. “Before coming to the center I was all alone with no family. Now I feel I have people who care about me and that makes me feel better, inside and out,” he said.

For four years in a row, Health Foundation has provided funding to help JCS achieve its goal of improving the fitness and well-being of older adults. The program is operated through the agency’s Senior Adult Services Division. Through it, seniors are encouraged to increase their social involvement and take an active role in maintaining healthy aging.
